Guardianship of Adults

Guardianship in New Hampshire is a legal process that allows a court to appoint a guardian for an individual who is unable to manage his or her own affairs due to mental illness, developmental disability, traumatic brain injury, dementia, or some other incapacitating condition. Once appointed, a guardian may be responsible for making medical, personal and financial decisions on behalf of the person under guardianship to ensure that their needs are being met.

It’s important to understand the procedures and requirements involved in establishing or maintaining an existing guardianship to effectively protect vulnerable adults.  The Culberson Law Office is uniquely qualified to help you petition for guardianship and, once appointed, to understand your role and responsibilities to the individual under guardianship and the court. We have helped thousands of individuals and families with all aspects relating to adult guardianship to include:

  • Petitioning for guardianship and presenting evidence to the court

  • Representing proposed wards and individuals already under guardianship

  • Representing family members in contested guardianships

  • Changing or terminating guardianships

  • Helping guardians complete inventories, annual reports and accountings

  • Connecting guardians with helpful supports and resources

  • Assisting guardians with emergency admissions to psychiatric or care facilities

  • Identifying less-restrictive available alternatives to guardianship
